It is encouraging to know that current government administrations are offering populist schemes and beneficial policies to farmers. For example, in Andhra Pradesh farmers would be getting free electricity, and low interest loans, better prices for their crops, construction of irrigation projects, encouragement micro irrigation etc,. However, I still do not think that the farming with these current systems and practices would bring considerable profits to farmers. The major problems faced by these to farmers are 1) Natural calamities like droughts and floods, 2)This section of the farmers is hugely affected by corruption as these farmers are at the receiving end 3) Globalization, wherein all of a sudden the prices for their crops would go down because the same would be available cheaply from other countries, 4) Poor education and knowledge gap. Most of the farmers are not well educated, and they would not know the current technique and technology to improve their farming efficiency.
With this background, I think, corporatization of farming would be a good option to improve the condition of the farmers. Farmers could lease the land to the corporate companies and reach a mutual agreement of working under them on a monthly salary basis. The major advantages of corporatism would be that they would be able to bring in latest technology and trends into farming and also they would invest money in research on how to improve the profits from farming. Also, If these corporatists open their own stores, they would cut on the middle man, who makes a lot of money in just transferring goods from farmers to demand points.
Personally, I do not appreciate the suggestion of farmers leasing out their land to corporate and work for them, as it is their land, in which they have been farming for generations. However, keeping in mind the fact that most of the farmers are extremely unhappy, and willing to consider other options, I think this would be the right option.
